US Army Has Selected Rotorcraft Engine Inlet Barrier Filter for 2010 CPP Award

The US Army has selected CFDRC for the 2010 SBIR Commercialization Pilot Program (CPP) (http://www.armysbir.com/sbir/cpp_fy09.htm) entitled: “Integration of Advanced Inlet Particle Separator and Barrier Filtration Technologies for Turboshaft Engine Operation in Severe Sand Environments.” This is a highly competitive process for projects with high transition potential that meet high-priority requirements (less than 3% of Phase II SBIR projects are selected). The CPP provides bridge funding for transitioning the technology to the US Army helicopter fleet.

“We will be working very closely with the Army and a major U.S. Army rotorcraft manufacturer to reduce the amount of sand ingested into the rotorcraft engine during nominal landing and takeoff operations” stated Mr. Matthew Thomas, Director of Propulsion/Power at CFDRC. “We are scheduled to evaluate this technology within a nominal takeoff and landing operation duty cycle in less than 2 years. The sooner we can get this technology into desert operations, the sooner we assist the most precious resource we have in America, our soldiers.”
